Designing Homes for Connection
At Burns Village & Farm, the architectural design of homes plays a pivotal role in nurturing community connections. Drawing inspiration from successful cohousing models, the community emphasizes features that promote interaction among residents while respecting individual privacy.
The Role of Front Porches in Community Building
One of the key design elements at Burns Village & Farm is the inclusion of front porches. Unlike traditional suburban layouts that prioritize backyards, front porches serve as transitional spaces between private interiors and shared community areas. They act as informal gathering spots where residents can engage in spontaneous conversations, greet neighbors, and participate in the daily rhythm of community life.
Architect Sarah Susanka, in her "Not So Big Showhouse" project, highlighted the importance of placing primary living spaces adjacent to front porches to facilitate movement outside and encourage neighborly interactions.
Shared Spaces and the Common House
Beyond individual homes, Burns Village & Farm is designed around shared spaces that foster communal activities. The Common House serves as the heart of the community, providing facilities such as a communal kitchen, dining area, and recreational spaces. This central hub is where residents can gather for shared meals, meetings, and social events, strengthening the bonds among community members.
The Common House is envisioned as an extension of individual homes, offering spaces for various activities and promoting sustainability through energy-efficient design.
Pedestrian-Friendly Design
To enhance safety and encourage interactions, Burns Village & Farm plans to implement a pedestrian-friendly layout. By eliminating vehicular traffic within the residential areas and providing ample walkways, residents can enjoy leisurely strolls, children can play safely, and neighbors can engage in casual encounters, all contributing to a cohesive community fabric.
Sustainable and Inclusive Design
Sustainability is a core principle at Burns Village & Farm. Homes are designed with more sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship. Additionally, the community aims to be inclusive, accommodating diverse needs to ensure that all residents feel welcome and valued. Community members seek opportunities to develop their skills in collaborative governance as part of enhancing the quality of relationships and efficiency in decision-making.
