At Burns Village & Farm, the journey from vision to reality has been one of passion, dedication, and community spirit. What started as a dream in 2019 has evolved into a thriving cohousing project, with exciting milestones achieved and even greater opportunities ahead. The upcoming Big Reveal on February 6th offers a unique opportunity for prospective members to learn about the community’s progress and explore how they can become part of this pioneering movement in sustainable living.
Our Journey So Far
The foundation of Burns Village & Farm began in 2019, when a founding group came together to search for the ideal land and a big dream. Through perseverance and a shared commitment to sustainability, the community has accomplished key milestones, including:
2021: Securing a contract on the land and forming a vital partnership with the local farm landowner, family and community officials.
2022: Hosting the "Getting It Built" workshop with Katie McCamant, an expert in cohousing, and selecting a cohousing architect
2023: Growing membership from 3 to 9 households and completing the site planning workshop.
2024: Completing preliminary designs for the common house and individual units and welcoming new households.
Each milestone represents a step toward realizing the dream of a vibrant, sustainable, and affordable community designed for those who value connection and environmental stewardship.
What’s Next for Burns Village & Farm?
The community is entering a pivotal stage, with several exciting developments on the horizon, including:
Design Closure Workshop: Finalizing the look and functionality of energy-efficient homes and the Common House, tailored to fit diverse needs.
Updated Budgets: Ensuring transparency and affordability for future residents.
Annexation and Zoning Approval: Bringing us closer to breaking ground and moving in.
Expansion Opportunities: Preparing for more families to join and grow the community together.
By late 2025, the community will transition into the next phase, preparing construction documents, hiring builders, and moving towards groundbreaking!
Introducing the Common House: The Heart of the Community
One of the most exciting updates is the design of the Common House, a nearly 5,000 sq. ft. space featuring:
A Great Room & Dining Area for gatherings and celebrations.
A commercial-style kitchen to occasionally cook and share meals with neighbors.
Guest rooms for visiting friends and family.
A dedicated “Quiet Room” for meditation and yoga.
Multi-purpose rooms for activities such as reading, remote work/meetings, and crafts.
Plans for a basement space with options such as an exercise room, music room, and storm shelter.
This shared space is more than just a building; it’s where friendships are forged, ideas are exchanged, and a true sense of community thrives.
Your Home Options at Burns Village & Farm
The village will feature four distinct home types, designed with sustainability and affordability in mind:
Stacked Flats (Type B & C1) – Affordable and compact with 2 bedrooms, perfect for small families or individuals.
Townhomes (Type C2 & D) – Larger living spaces with 2-3 bedrooms, designed for aging-in-place with a first-floor bedroom, some with the option of finishing a basement with a 4th bedroom.
Proposed home prices range from $360,000 to $700,000, offering high-quality, energy-efficient construction with access to all shared amenities.
